Knowledge was designed and written around 1996-97 as a C++ CGI program. The aim was to develop a web-based collaborative system to allow users to easily add/update information with the system automatically maintaining correct linking of information as the site is enhanced and reorganised. So it was really an approach for how to store information as well as a system that supported this; basically how to implement an enhanced encyclopedia on the Internet. But the system was more useful than just an encyclopedia, it was designed to also work with daily tasks like user's notes, system designs etc...

The system worked surprisingly well and was used for a number of years. Unfortunately the wiki concept was new at that time and there wasn't much interest in this system from others.

The design also considered how to have other websites (and intranets) collaborating together and how to keep information private or shared amongst small groups while still working within the knowledge system.

Lack of free time and other projects meant that upgrading knowledge remained on a to-do list. It has currently resurfaced as a Java note organising application called organwiser. See organwiser for more details.

Interestingly enough, the knowledge system could still be used today and integrate wikipedia and other information sources into one global knowledge system.
